The rise of online reviews has transformed the way businesses operate, with customer feedback playing a crucial role in shaping reputations and driving change.
Why it matters: Reviews offer valuable insights into customer satisfaction, service quality, and areas for improvement, allowing businesses to adapt and enhance their offerings.
The details:
- Businesses, especially in competitive industries like hospitality, actively monitor and analyze reviews across platforms like Tripadvisor, Google, and Yelp.
- Recurring themes in reviews, such as complaints about outdated decor or praise for friendly staff, help businesses prioritize issues and respond effectively.
- Engaging directly with reviewers demonstrates that a business values its customers, fostering trust and loyalty.
- Negative reviews provide honest insights into areas needing improvement and can serve as catalysts for innovation and change.
As technology evolves, artificial intelligence and machine learning make it easier for businesses to analyze vast amounts of feedback quickly, enabling more proactive responses.
The challenges: The rise of fake reviews is a growing concern, with platforms like Tripadvisor flagging and removing millions of fraudulent reviews annually.
The bottom line: By reading, responding to, and acting on reviews, businesses can foster a loyal customer base and continually improve their offerings, making reviews a valuable conversation between businesses and their customers.
Politically motivated bad reviews have become a growing concern for businesses, with individuals posting negative reviews based on perceived political stances rather than actual experiences.
Why it matters: These reviews, often containing insults or falsehoods, can significantly damage a business’s reputation and financial performance.
The details:
- Business owners are advised to be vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious reviews to platforms for removal.
- Real-life stories highlight the impact of politically motivated reviews, with businesses facing backlash over issues such as the Middle East conflict, Donald Trump, COVID-19 vaccinations, and LGBTQ rights.
- AI technology has improved the ability to detect and remove false reviews, but some still slip through the cracks.
- Encouraging satisfied customers to post positive reviews can help counter the effects of malicious ones.
What’s next: In an era where politics can unexpectedly impact business reputation, staying vigilant and proactive in managing online reviews is more important than ever.

The garage confirmed the car would be ready by Friday afternoon, so I drove to the rental office in Bayonne, dropped off the rental car, and took a taxi to Biarritz. I arrived at the garage around 4:45 pm on May 3. However, this is when things took a turn for the worse.
My car was still up on a high hydraulic lift in the workshop, with the gearbox in pieces on the floor. A woman in the garage office politely apologized, explaining they had discovered a second problem after dismantling the engine. The part required for that repair had not arrived.
Despite having my mobile number, she had not thought to call me with this disappointing update. As a result, I had to return to Bayonne to get another rental car for the weekend. The situation worsened when the first taxi arranged by Opteven failed to show up.
Eventually, another one arrived around 5:40 pm. The driver informed me that due to Friday rush-hour traffic, we would have difficulty reaching the Bayonne office by 6 pm. Demonstrating great initiative, the driver got me there by illegally driving down a long bus lane to bypass the traffic jam.
I got into my second rental car and returned to the house.
Garage miscommunication causes holiday chaos
Meanwhile, Jane started searching online for a flight home.
With no car, her holiday had come to an end. On Saturday, May 4, Jane flew from Biarritz to Gatwick with minimal luggage. She crossed London to Kings Cross and took the train north.
A friend picked her up at Berwick station, and she arrived home by Saturday night. The dogs and I enjoyed an unexpected extra weekend in the lovely Pays-Basque countryside. Unbelievably, Crosa let me down again on Monday, May 6.
They had promised the car would be ready, but it was still in pieces. This time, the part had arrived but broke during installation. They assured me it would definitely be ready on Tuesday.
After another round of back-and-forth and yet another rental car, things still did not go according to plan. By the end of my ordeal, I felt frustrated and stressed rather than relaxed and rejuvenated from my holiday. However, I gained a newfound appreciation for the importance of online reviews and the harsh reality of relying on service promises.
