Raleigh has seen a 78% surge in homicides so far in 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to a recent survey. The alarming increase has raised concerns among local advocates like Kerwin Pittman, who emphasized the need for more programs that address the root causes of crime, such as mental healthcare, job access, and affordable housing. “Clearly, we are missing the mark,” Pittman said.
“We have to address the root causes of why these individuals are committing their crimes in the first place.
Raleigh’s urgent need for solutions
Until we do that, it will be a vicious cycle.”
