Harris Prepares Critical Democratic Convention Speech

dailynewsmissouriimage

Kamala Harris is preparing for the most important speech of her career at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

Her goal is to persuade American voters to defeat Donald Trump in November’s presidential election and put her in the White House. Harris’s campaign is barely a month old following a decision to step in after Biden’s withdrawal from seeking re-election.

Harris, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential pick, have quickly overturned the election’s narrative.

They transformed a solid Trump lead in the polls over Biden into a slight but clear advantage over the former Republican president. In her speech, Harris will make a direct pitch to voters to back her vision for the United States.

Her campaign has sought to portray a more optimistic, future-focused view of the country than her rival.

Throughout the week at the convention, the audience has heard from the Democratic Party’s most powerful players, such as Biden, Bill Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi, who have thrown their support behind Harris. Rising stars within the party also gave primetime speeches.

Harris’s speech is expected to lay out her historical bid to become the first woman president and the first woman of color. Her address will likely focus on her work as a prosecutor and her efforts in defending victims of crime. It will also draw a contrast between her positive view of the country’s future prospects and Trump’s warnings about immigration and crime.

Harris’s critical convention speech preparations

Speaker after speaker has hailed Harris as a change-agent who would not only defeat Trump but lift the country higher, ushering in a new chapter of possibility. The Harris campaign, particularly through Walz, has utilized pointed rhetoric to unsettle Trump, displaying an ability to insult and poke fun at him.

The campaign’s newfound edge in the polls has impressed many observers. Trump has responded by insulting Harris and inventing nicknames for her, attempting to paint her as a leftwing extremist and questioning her racial identity. However, these jibes have had little effect and even drawn criticism from some senior Republicans.

Harris consistently tops Trump by three or four points in recent head-to-head surveys and has improved her standing in key swing states. Throughout the convention, Democratic speakers have sought to keep Trump on the defensive. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries likened Trump to an “old boyfriend” trying to rekindle a relationship with the American people.

“Bro, we broke up with you for a reason,” Jeffries said. Laphonza Butler, a California senator and friend of Harris’s, stated, “Kamala Harris has always understood the assignment,” adding that Harris’s mother would be proud of her. On Wednesday night, Walz delivered a strong attack on Trump, defended his own record running Minnesota, and passionately advocated for Harris.

He led the crowd in a chant of, “We’re not going back! We’re not going back!”

Walz criticized Trump and his running mate’s agenda as only benefiting the “richest and most extreme” individuals in the US, calling it wrong and dangerous. The convention continues to build momentum for Harris as she heads into the final stretch of her campaign, aiming to secure a historic victory in November.
