Orlando secured the top spot in a recent ranking of the best cities for retirees in 2024. The “Best & Worst Places to Retire” list, compiled by AARP, evaluated 182 U.S. cities based on factors such as affordability, activities, quality of life, and health care. Petersburg, Florida; Casper, Wyoming; and Atlanta, Georgia. Scottsdale ranked third for quality of life, while Casper placed third in affordability. An analyst emphasized the importance of choosing a retirement location wisely, particularly for those on a fixed income.
“The best cities for retired people are those that minimize taxes and expenses and offer good opportunities for retirees to continue paid work for extra income if they choose to do so. Additionally, the top cities provide high-quality health care and offer plenty of enjoyable activities for retirees.”
The rankings come at a time when more Americans are considering delaying retirement due to financial concerns. A Northwestern Mutual study in April revealed that Americans believe they need a significant sum to “comfortably” retire, a figure that had increased by 15% from the previous year.
The best cities for retirement ranking followed an earlier identification of Florida, Colorado, Virginia, Delaware, and Wyoming as top states for retirement. With five cities in the top 10, Florida maintained its reputation as a retirement-friendly state in 2024.
