Three small earthquakes were recorded in southeast Missouri this week. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 2.3 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday night at about 10:40 p.m. The epicenter was located 4 miles southeast of Marston and 12 miles west of Hickman, KY. On Friday morning, the same area experienced another tremor with a magnitude of 2.2. A third quake, measuring 1.7 in magnitude, was detected in the same vicinity on Saturday morning.

Over the past six months, nearly three dozen tremors have occurred within a five-square mile area on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River in New Madrid County.

In contrast, only about half a dozen tremors were recorded directly across the river in northwest Tennessee during the same period.

However, around Ridgely, Tennessee, which is located ten miles further south in Lake County, another three dozen minor quakes have been documented in the same timeframe. These two regions are the most active zones of the New Madrid Fault system. The fault extends from northeastern Arkansas to southern Illinois.

No injuries or damage have been reported as a result of these minor earthquakes.
