The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that a group of retirees and disabled individuals will not receive their Social Security payments this week. If you qualify for the Retirement, Survivor, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) program, claimed benefits after May 1997, and were born between the 21st and the 31st, you are among the beneficiaries who will receive their monthly checks in the last week of September. Understanding Social Security payments and their monthly schedule is key.
According to the SSA, beneficiaries from different programs have their benefits scheduled as follows:
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program payments are made on the first day of the month unless it falls on a weekend or holiday. Retirement, Survivor, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) program payments for those who claimed benefits before May 1997 are made on the third day of the month. For beneficiaries who claimed their Social Security payments after May 1997:
September 11th (2nd Wednesday): For those born between the 1st and the 10th.
September 18th (3rd Wednesday): For those born between the 11th and the 20th.
Social Security payment delays explained
September 25th (4th Wednesday): For those born between the 21st and the 31st.
To apply for a retirement program, you must be at least 62 years old, have paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years, and meet the Full Retirement Age (FRA) requirements to qualify for full benefits. Social Security credits, which are based on total earnings and self-employment income for the year, are necessary to qualify. However, the amount of your monthly retirement income is not solely based on the number of credits earned but rather your eligibility for retirement and other benefits, including Medicare, survivor benefits, and disability benefits.
To apply for disability benefits, you must have earned Social Security credits by paying payroll taxes before becoming disabled and prove blindness or a physical condition that prevents substantial gainful activity (SGA) for at least one year. Once accepted into the retirement or disability benefits program, the SSA calculates the monthly payment amount based on each beneficiary’s unique circumstances. Payment amounts for retirees and disabled individuals vary and will be updated in January 2024.
