A key factor in this election will be the availability of early voting and mail-in ballot options in each state. According to a recent map, 46 states and the District of Columbia offer early voting to all voters.

This includes states like California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington, which conduct all-mail elections where every active, registered voter receives a ballot. However, some states have more restrictive policies. Connecticut and South Carolina offer early in-person voting but require an eligible reason to vote by mail.

Meanwhile, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and West Virginia do not offer early voting at all and also require an eligible reason for mail-in voting. The race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is particularly tight in the nation’s seven battleground states.
voter registration and early voting options
CBS News polling shows them tied or within a 2-point margin in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, and Georgia are also expected to play a crucial role in determining the winner. Both political parties are gearing up for potential election challenges.
David Becker, executive director of The Center for Election Innovation and Research and a CBS News election law contributor, noted, “What our research shows is that for almost all voters in the United States, it’s easier to vote than ever. Almost all voters can vote early at a time and place of their choosing, and the vast majority can vote by mail if they prefer.”
However, concerns remain about the certification process. Since 2020, over two dozen counties in eight states, including Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, have attempted to block the certification of their elections.
New rules in Georgia also empower local officials to question the election before certification, potentially delaying the process past the November 12 deadline. As the election draws nearer, voters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with their state’s specific voting options and deadlines to ensure their voices are heard in this crucial democratic process.
