UN General Assembly Demands Israel End Occupation

The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution demanding Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within a year. The resolution, based on an advisory opinion from the UN’s highest court, passed with 124 votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions. The court found that Israel’s presence in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip is unlawful under international law.

It stated Israel must end its “unlawful presence” and evacuate all settlers from the occupied territories. Since 1967, Israel has built about 160 settlements housing around 700,000 Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The court said these settlements violate international law, a claim Israel disputes.

Israel’s prime minister dismissed the court’s decision as “lies” and said “the Jewish people are not occupiers in their own land.” The Palestinian Authority called the resolution’s passing a “pivotal and historic moment” that reflects a “global consensus that the occupation must end.”

The US voted against the resolution, warning it was “one-sided” and offered no path forward. The UK abstained, saying the resolution lacked “sufficient clarity” to advance a negotiated two-state solution.

British NGOs criticized the UK’s abstention. Oxfam called it “profoundly disappointing,” while Global Justice Now accused the government of disregarding Palestinian suffering under “military-enforced racial discrimination.”

The vote comes after almost a year of conflict in Gaza that has killed over 41,000 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Violence has also escalated in the West Bank, with more than 680 Palestinians and 22 Israelis killed in the same period.
