Social Security checks will be distributed this week, with recipients potentially receiving up to $4,873. This distribution includes two rounds of payments for retired and disabled Americans. All Social Security benefits are administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA), which provides monthly cash to tens of millions of recipients.

The first round of payments will be made on Tuesday, October 1, to those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), primarily benefiting disabled adults and those aged 65 and older with limited financial resources. The second round of payments will be made on Thursday, October 3, targeting individuals who have been claiming benefits since before May 1997. In January 2024, the average monthly retirement benefit for Social Security claimants was $1,907.

These benefits are calculated based on an individual’s 35 highest-earning years and the age at which they began claiming benefits.

According to the SSA, maximum benefits vary with the age of retirement: $3,822 for those retiring at full retirement age, $2,710 for those retiring at age 62, and $4,873 for those retiring at age 70.

Additionally, Social Security recipients can soon expect an announcement regarding the annual Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). Independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst Mary Johnson has forecasted that the COLA will be 2.5 percent for 2025. “Despite it being the lowest COLA since 2021, a 2.5 percent COLA would be considered about average,” Johnson said.

Krisstin Petersmarck, the founder and CEO of New Horizon Retirement Solutions, commented on the anticipated adjustment: “I think most people will be disappointed by the COLA increase. Inflation is going down, but not in all the right places like the grocery stores. So, people on fixed incomes, like seniors collecting Social Security, might find a small COLA increase insufficient.

However, historically, about 50 percent of COLA increases have been lower than the inflation rate for that year, so this is not necessarily a negative sign.”

The official COLA announcement will be made on October 10.
