The Florida Gators cross country teams put on strong performances at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri, on Friday, September 27, 2024. The men’s team finished 10th out of 36 teams, while the women’s team secured an impressive 4th place out of 38 teams. True freshman Jonathan Leon led the way for the men’s 8k race, moving up from 60th at the 1000m mark to finish 34th with a time of 23:57.
Gainesville native Riley Smith, also a freshman, followed closely in 48th place, clocking in at 24:03.6.
On the women’s side, redshirt junior Beth Morley started strong in 12th place and worked her way up to finish 6th overall. Juniors Tia Wilson and Caroline Wells claimed the 11th and 12th spots, respectively, with freshman Reagan Gilmore making her collegiate debut in 13th place.
Gators excel at Gans Creek
Head coach praised the event, stating, “It was a great meet and Missouri is set to host the NCAA Championships next year, attracting many who want to experience the course. This was the nicest course I’ve been on, and the cool weather provided perfect conditions.”
The Gators’ performance at the Gans Creek Classic builds on their strong start to the 2024 season. The teams will now focus on preparing for their upcoming meet at the FSU XC Invite in Tallahassee on October 11.
