A massive fire broke out in downtown Metter, Georgia on Saturday evening, causing severe damage to several local businesses. The fire started around 5:30 p.m. at Aly’s Restaurante, where the owner reported smelling smoke. Adjacent businesses on Broad St.
were quickly evacuated as flames began to spread. In addition to Aly’s, the businesses impacted by the fire include Sabor Michoacano, The Flower Basket, and Queensborough Bank. Smoke could be seen pouring from the top floor vents of the bank building.
Firefighters from multiple departments worked tirelessly to contain the flames, with Metter’s ladder truck spraying water onto the tops of the buildings. About an hour into the firefighting efforts, an explosion was heard, believed to have been caused by a propane tank located behind the restaurants. Approximately two hours after the fire began, the backs of the smaller buildings collapsed.
By 8 p.m., the flames seemed to be contained. The Metter Fire Department received assistance from several nearby fire departments, including Statesboro, Bulloch County, Bellville, and Claxton.

Firefighters from Stillmore, Lyons, Roger’s State Prison, Georgia Department of Corrections, Twin City, and Emanuel County also responded to provide mutual aid. By 11:56 p.m., officials announced that the fire was under control, although fire teams continued to work through the night to help affected businesses salvage what remained. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. As the community begins to recover from this devastating event, local business owner Brianna Dillon has started a fundraising campaign to support the affected businesses. Dillon, who owns Simply Bree and leads the Chamber of Commerce in Metter, is selling t-shirts with the message “Together we rebuild” to raise money for each business involved in the fire.
Initially setting a goal to sell 50 shirts, Dillon was overwhelmed by the community’s response, with over 225 t-shirts ordered in less than 24 hours. The sales have surpassed her goal, allowing her to give each affected business $1,000. Dillon’s efforts have opened the door for others to contribute and support the rebuilding process.
The Mayor of Metter has indicated that efforts are underway to temporarily relocate the businesses affected by the fire. As the community comes together to support one another, the resilience and spirit of Candler County residents shine through in the face of adversity.
